ABSTRACT
As the Soviet Union moves towards its fourth decade of space operations, clear strategic and technological trends are emerging. Within an overall geopolitical framework these trends embrace the military, commercial, and scientific-exploratory aspects of the Soviet space programme. A basic conclusion of these trends is that the Soviet presence in space is permanent and will steadily increase. This manned and unmanned presence in space will be dynamic and employ increasingly sophisticated technology.
