ABSTRACT

The chapter looks at the development of Anglican thought with regard to Baptismal Regeneration and Confirmation. The discussion begins with Pusey's tract and his views are supplemented with those of Keeble. The work of F. D. Maurice and his friends as they deliberately move away from the teaching of Pusey is then expounded. Broad-church views are discussed as a corrective to a binary historiography seeing only a high church, low church divide. Then, the chapter turns to further discussion of ‘Baptismal Regeneration’ in relation to Confirmation. A range of views are discussed, showing a breadth of opinion. The chapter notes that some seceded, but also this is only the beginning of controversy with regard to Confirmation.
