ABSTRACT

This chapter digs deeply into organizational structures by first reviewing traditional and alternative ways of organizing positions before describing the leadership styles that determine how people within those positions interact. Some leadership styles are better suited than others to facilitate educational equity when the people consider not only if the leadership style itself fosters equity but also how leadership decisions interact with the organizational structure to enable the implementation of the equity action plan. Similar to a hierarchical organizational structure for which transactional leadership is a good fit, there is concern about the school culture being cold and meritocratic rather than collaborative. In the 1990s, along with the emergence of magnet schools, the first charter schools, and an interest in "progressive" pedagogies, came a new leadership style focused on teaching and learning: instructional leadership. Transformational leadership couples a justice orientation with a visionary mindset.
