ABSTRACT

This chapter details how white administrators, and those with other kinds of leadership responsibilities, can develop specific strategies to work more effectively at dismantling racism. This includes building more authentic and principled relationships with Leaders of Color, who are often severely underrepresented on leadership teams. The authors will also look at governance structures, such as school boards, and their role in supporting antiracist practices. School leaders are in a unique position to address racism on campus, but many are not sure where to start. A revised version of a letter that one school leader sent to their entire faculty and staff is instructive. School leaders need to be at the helm of ensuring antiracist, systemic change. Whether a superintendent, head of school, principal, or department chair, anyone in a leadership position must be able to clearly articulate the purpose and the vision for change and must be vigilant in monitoring for impact and evaluating for effectiveness.
