ABSTRACT

When the Hôpital de l’Alliance was taken over by the French Medical Service the London Committee of the Allies Hospital Benevolent Society met to discuss what they should do with the equipment of the hospital and with the funds in their hands. Sir William Younger and Mrs. Holman were deputed to find a suitable building or site. They inspected many properties in the Metropolitan area and finally chose the Manor House estate on the borders of Hampstead Heath. The Hospital was formally declared open on 29th September, 1917, by Field Marshal Sir William Robertson. He was introduced by his old comrade-in-arms Sir William Younger, the Chairman of the Society. The work of enlisting members and raising funds prospered greatly and in 1919 the Northern Area Council decided that the time had come to appoint a salaried organiser. They had not to look far to find a suitable candidate.
