ABSTRACT

When the Committee reassembled Bruce was confirmed in his position of Acting Secretary. The officials of the London General Omnibus Company had throughout taken a friendly interest in the negotiations with their employees and several of them joined the Society as Annual Members. The Company agreed to deduct the busmen’s pennies at source and to forward their contributions to the Hospital by cheque, a payroll facility of very great value. Dobson knew that the Manor House Hospital was devoting itself more and more to treating the casualties of industry, and decided to call on the Resident Surgeon and find out if he was prepared to examine injured railwaymen and, when necessary, to substantiate his reports in open court. The essential work at Manor House proceeded smoothly in spite of all these administrative alarms and excursions. It was carried on mainly by the Resident Surgeon who was busily occupied in the wards and the theatre for ten hours daily.
