ABSTRACT

The cost of maintaining the temporary wards at Manor House Hospital was about as much as the Industrial Orthopaedic Society could meet out of its funds, diminishing as they were with the fall in payments from the Ministry of Pensions. To find money for daily expenses was their chief and serious concern. Excavation and building proceeded satisfactorily and by 30th June, 1930, all was ready for the laying of the foundation stones. The first wing of the permanent hospital was completed in the autumn of 1931 and the Opening Ceremony took place on 22nd October. A wave of pleasure swept through the Society when it became known that H.R.H. The Duke of York, K.G., had graciously consented to open the new wing. The Duke was received at the door of the Hospital by the Mayor of Hendon, by the President of the Hospital, the Rt. Hon. A. V. Alexander, and the Resident Surgeon, Sir Ambrose Woodall.
