ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the fact that the Wenchuan earthquake made Zhu Jianqiang (Strong Pig) and Zhu Gangqiang(Cast-Iron Pig), the two cultural symbols of “strong” and “rigid,” which enter our lives and affect the artist's creation. These two very ordinary pigs have thus got rid of their lowly livestock identity and entered human social life through this artificial naming method, which is a cultural expression of human self-existence realized by art itself. Here, culture is synonymous with art, and art is synonymous with culture. In this respect, performance artists play half the role of anthropologists, and the other half, of course, needs to be played by self-aware anthropologists.
