ABSTRACT

Guiberson, award-winning children's book author Nonfiction authors use text structure to arrange and connect ideas. Many educators teach nonfiction text structure at the sentence level, but the authors would like to encourage teachers to put more emphasis on discussing the overall text structure of the books students read. Most traditional nonfiction and browseable nonfiction books have a Description text structure, active nonfiction generally features a Sequence structure, and nearly all narrative nonfiction has a Chronological Sequence structure, but expository literature can have just about any text structure the readers can think of. One of the greatest challenges a nonfiction writer faces is finding just the right text structure. What a wonderful way to empower kids! Even when using standard text structures, nonfiction authors find an amazing variety of ways to share the ideas and information they're passionate about.
