ABSTRACT

Physically modeling absolute value is crucial in helping students begin their journey with absolute value equations and inequalities. Most students understand the concept that distance is always nonnegative, so absolute value equalities are more readily understandable than absolute value inequalities. One teacher begins his lesson by telling the class to line up in a horizontal row in the middle of the mathematics corridor. The conjectures and revisions illustrate that most of the students are beginning to understand the concept of absolute value. The teacher challenges his students to write an equation and represent it on a number line to show the choices Amanda has to make based on the information the passenger gave her.
