ABSTRACT

A small population (less than 20 percent) will need more intensive intervention from a reading specialist, in addition to high-quality classroom instruction. This chapter begins by looking inside a third-grade classroom where the teacher uses a four-hour workshop framework to integrate instruction across reading, writing, language, and content areas. Sheena, who is a third-grade teacher, understands that a well-designed word study lesson includes six procedures: review of existing knowledge; application to new information, including clear examples; guided practice with teacher scaffolding; collaborative work in pairs or small groups; writing about learning; and summarizing learning, including implications for transfer. During the language studies block, Sheena is able to address the functions of language at multiple levels, including genre characteristics, text features, sentence structures, and word usage. She closes the mini-lesson by reminding the students that when they write their own fables, they can refer to the list of flaws on the anchor chart to develop their characters and plot.
