ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at multiple examples of how teachers are working together to effect positive changes in their instructional practices. It shares snapshots of exemplary schools that use teacher collaboration as a tool for school improvement. The chapter provides examples of how teachers use action research to study the impact of collaboration on their teaching practices. It also looks at an example of how teacher observations of student learning are a powerful means for collaboration and self-reflection. Every school should become a learning community where teachers come together frequently to study and work collaboratively as a means for improving their craft. Teachers should attend to the collaborative nature of their language as they interact with colleagues around a common goal. The Council Bluffs Community School District in Iowa implements a variety of collaborative meetings to meet the instructional needs of teachers.
