ABSTRACT
Managing a classroom can be one of the most difficult challenges teachers face. Teaching inquiry in the manner that we propose in this book requires teachers to give up some of the control they are accustomed to having. The most creative lessons or investigations are worthless if students are ignoring directions, misbehaving, using materials inappropriately, being unsafe, or acting in a disrespectful manner. When students are respected, and explicitly taught how to practice self-control and manage their own behaviors, they begin to learn more and feel a sense of empowerment. Encourage kids to share their struggles and celebrate accomplishments together. When they truly understand each other, they develop empathy. When students are unkind to each other or do something that may cause another student to feel that what he or she has to say is not good enough, get in there and help the kids problem solve.
