ABSTRACT
Teachers lead students to examine numerous reviews and critiques for patterns worth emulating. Then, they demonstrate how to go online and publish a critical review of a CD or book on the Barnes and Noble or Amazon website. Teachers who understand what writing is all about invite their students to construct essays and letters for real-world purposes, to publish their work, to be committed to causes, to be heard. The texts demonstrate the real reasons that people write self-based essays——they write to celebrate people, their deeds, their triumphs, and their challenges. Essay writing is about citizens who care enough to pick up the pen and write.
