ABSTRACT

Learners initially mimic models before they can perform a task independently. Think-alouds and write-alouds interpret covert thinking into overt processes that occur during spontaneous writing. There are actually a wide variety of the terms, which can be used as connectors and help glue the sentences of a paragraph together. The Transitions Sandwich offers a ready reference menu. The chart offers a possible direction for developing a body of details for many common petitions. The Petition Framework indicates that when the term is used, it is helpful for writers to develop a T-chart, placing major facts in the left column with supportive details in the right. Novices can confuse text-based and self-based writing, which becomes evident when they move into independent response. Students who have been appropriately encouraged to predict “what happens next” throughout primary-grade reading lessons sometimes use that path when it is inappropriate.
