ABSTRACT

Authors of writers’ guides frequently suggest an easy way to end a response, report, or essay——use a circular closing. There are specific transitions that signal the end is near——words like finally, lastly, in closing, and in conclusion. Once students understand how to construct a good single paragraph with an introduction, layers of evidence, and a conclusion, mountain climbing has been made easier. There is an enormous difference between a demonstration lesson where most details are planned out and an unrehearsed demonstration. Most often, teachers are told to plan, plan, plan, if they want great lessons. Students need to observe a writer’s messes.
