ABSTRACT

Social studies and history in the primary grades are often taught through biographies of important people. So it makes sense that we as educators think deeply about whose lives we study, what parts of their lives we focus on, and how we make connections between that one person and a broader understanding of both the past and the present. This chapter introduces young students to Black people who made history. It describes some essential ideas to keep in mind as one begin to plan for teaching about Black historical figures. One way to push back against the idea that Black history should exist and be celebrated only during the twenty-eight days of February is to celebrate and learn Black history each and every day. Social media has become an educational tool that people lean on when conducting Black history research.
