ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the four units that are taught across the content areas in the classroom to see some ways we might add to, revise, challenge, and disrupt the curriculum in order to teach Black history throughout the year. Many teachers have experience weaving literacy and social studies units together to meet standards within each content area and to provide meaningful opportunities for students to read, to write, and to understand our world. These units can be beautiful places to center Black histories through the use of children’s books that explore history and strengthen literacy skills. Many teachers begin the school year with literacy units that help students explore the work of readers and writers. Social media can be a great place to see what is currently going on in the world of science and to view photos of scientists at work in the field.
