ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the ways to celebrate Black History Month as one part of the continuous, yearlong, lifelong study of Black history. Black history can be celebrated through many avenues, in many ways, and by many people. One way to celebrate Black History Month is to choose a theme or focus that highlights an element of Black culture, joy, agency, or history. Music is a wonderful way to bring Black histories into the classroom. Working with songs as short texts can be a powerful way to sprinkle in a celebration of Black history throughout the day. Use Black History Month as a time of continued self-education. A moment to further engage with the Black history that has been in the classroom throughout the year. And a moment to recognize and highlight Black joy and community—past, present, and future.
