ABSTRACT

Carroll’s writing breathes with the beauty and vitality of life on Earth. Unfortunately, the environmental unit based on The City of Ember started in the middle of a Chicago winter, and Leslie’s administration was not too keen on letting the reader outdoors. After just ninety minutes, the students were seeing very different meanings in water. All of the students made folded Water Journals they could fit into their pockets. Although the students’ totals were considerably lower than the actual amount of water each American really uses, the numbers shocked them. The world is certainly filled with remarkable resources teachers can use to have students explore the environment. Teachers can work against dangers of education and create vibrant and authentic classroom experiences that encourage young adolescents to confront difficult and complex questions about life, personal choices and decisions, and environmental policies and priorities.
