ABSTRACT

Close writers learn from mentors all around them: published authors, teachers, peers, and even themselves. To become more purposeful with writing, mentor or teach someone else. Mentors have to think more intentionally about what they are doing and the choices they make. The kindergarten students are offered a clear model of the writing process from a mentor who is much closer in range to their own proficiencies. They ask questions of the author and discuss each page that is shared. The process of creating a book has become less mysterious and more possible for these young writers. Many schools sponsor reading clubs for their avid readers. It builds community around a common passion for reading and books. Many bookstores frequently schedule author discussions or book signings to promote the release of new books. Social media have definitely made connecting writers and readers infinitely more possible.
