ABSTRACT

Close writers problem-solve obstacles to writing stamina so that they can increase the volume of writing and purposeful practice necessary to improve. Volume simply refers to the amount of writing the children produce. Stamina refers to the active engagement with the writing process. It requires students to stay focused and on task for sustained periods of time. It is the quantitative process of writing. This chapter explores the correlation. Quick-writes take many formats, but the basic idea is to give students some kind of prompt or stimulus for writing. It could be a poem, a passage, or a picture. It might even be music that inspires them to write. When students understand some of the basic physiology of writing work, they can mindfully adjust their behaviors to support their stamina. They can see that they have some control over some of the basic aspects of their learning.
