ABSTRACT

This chapter provides more than a dozen effective differentiation practices and structures that will help the people refine their instruction. Some teachers view assessment through a narrow lens—as the test questions or projects that come at the end of a lesson or unit. The products students use to provide evidence of understanding can be negotiable as well. Many teachers follow Madeline Hunter's direct instruction model. It's a logical and well-loved approach that can be part of a differentiated classroom. Some students learn best through individual study, some learn best from small-group interactions, and some through whole-class instruction. For qualitative analysis, Becca might evaluate the poem using the general criteria for a specific type of poetry, such as focusing on the characteristics of a sonnet, narrative poem, haiku, or a poem with specific meter. There are many ways to raise and lower the complexity of an assignment for students.
