ABSTRACT

Successful differentiated lessons can require a lot of planning. Being proactive is very helpful, but there will be occasions when even our best planning fails to account for all that happens in the classroom. Some science students can recite Newton's First Law from memory, but they are not able to describe it or apply it well. Math students are learning that the sum of the interior angles of a quadrilateral equals 360 degrees, and the sum of the interior angles of a triangle equals 180 degrees. Lectures can be wonderful teaching tools if done well. Lectures in which the speaker unfolds a narrative in a compelling way are among the most remembered. For students who are on grade level, provide multiple opportunities to practice. For example, show students simple sentences such as those below, and ask them to describe the intended object without using the modifier.
