ABSTRACT

Conjectures often develop when the people start to notice patterns or regularity. The process of planning for theory-making mirrors the process of planning to nurture disagreement. The work of building a theory in reading starts with immersing students in texts that spark thought around an idea or concept. In the early stages of theory-building, the people can anticipate what conjectures their students might develop based on a combination of the information in front of them and their previous experiences. An interactive read-aloud is a useful way to give students time and support as they immerse themselves in the text and start developing theories. Christy noticed that a good variety of students entered the whole-group conversation, although the Turn and Talks that took place during the interactive read-aloud were also important opportunities for some of the quieter voices to express their ideas.
