Students have some experience both listening and talking with Turn and Talk partners and Conversation Clubs. Students may be starting to monitor their own level of participation in conversations, balancing the roles of listener and speaker. Sometimes a conversation will become derailed by a comment that other students feel the need to argue with or address, creating a distracting sub-conversation. One of the most important elements of dialogue is engaging with the reasoning of others. Monitoring oneself for clarity of expression is a complex skill. It requires both metacognition and an ability to consider the perspective of the listener.
