ABSTRACT

Children are capable mathematicians with their own ideas and ways of problem solving long before they enter school. Integrating the study of math and art allows children to continue to build confidence in their own ideas as well as to work collaboratively and creatively to explore new ideas. Consider setting up an iPad or other video recording device to record a time-lapse video of children’s explorations in the art center. Symmetry is a topic that intrigues artists, mathematicians, and nature lovers alike. Each year our class also spends time exploring the symmetry in our faces while drawing or painting self-portraits multiple times across the school year. Transient art focuses on the process of creation, and when the children are done exploring, they return the materials to storage containers, leaving a fresh space for the next artist to use. The art center can transcend the classroom walls.
