ABSTRACT

Educators use the documentation process as a form of assessment, taking note of what children understand and planning for next steps forward in instruction. Ben and Ethan are both kindergarten teachers in the same school. Although they each have their own class, they often work together to analyze student work and plan instruction. Pedagogical documentation invites student voice as children analyze and craft the stories of their experiences and learning together with educators. At the beginning of a new unit of study, set clear learning goals and objectives for students. Families can be empowered to share their observations, understandings, and suggestions for next steps as collaborators in the assessment process. Educators may just find that they grow as much as the children, because the documentation process requires them to continually reflect upon and refine their own practice and mathematical understanding.
