ABSTRACT

The summer has come and gone, and the people have left adventurous souls behind in various parts of the world. It is once again time to settle into the routines of work and the challenges of a new school year. The focus on non-fiction is multifaceted and includes the development of personal narratives, the leap into inquiry, the gradual-release-of-responsibility model, the teaching of nonfiction conventions, the incorporation of information literacy standards, and the idea that publishing is an ongoing process that includes conferring, editing, revising, sharing, and responding. Critical pedagogy causes one to make inquiries about equality and justice. The heart of the book takes the readers from start to finish how one might be able to work on a specific inquiry with the kids. The chapter on kids’ work is just that—their work.
