ABSTRACT

The first step in nonfiction writing is to get students talking about their world and reading and writing their world. The next step is for them to have access to comprehensible texts with fabulous images and to begin reading more of the nonfiction books that interest them. Spending high-quality time letting the kids explore questioning has been worthwhile because it helps them become more independent in the future. The kids like to make their thinking big and visible. For instance, the fishbowl activity is a good one. The language structures used for asking questions and answering can be differentiated depending on the sophistication of the child's English language development. The idea is to make sure that whatever they are doing is pertinent to the content or topic the rest of the class is studying.
