ABSTRACT

Outside the classroom door some kids are spread out on the cafeteria floor with research posters in progress about whale sharks and other sea creatures. By listening to their conversations and stories, the people learn from the children what their interests are and what matters to them. Sometimes kids will approach each other and lend what they know, whether it be information or ideas for art. Suddenly from a blank sheet of paper Alexia has three sea turtles popping up and swimming across it and text with what she knows and has learned. The environment is truly charged, and the pride in their eyes when they share their work is something the people see frequently. Because the kids have a variety of reading levels and differing amounts of schema about chosen topics, the people lend more of a hand in certain situations than in others.
