ABSTRACT

The hardest, most intensive, and time-consuming part of the residency work is the planning and deep thinking that take place weeks before we begin the actual demonstration teaching and coaching in classrooms. Choice within structure also means that once we’ve taught students how to do something and they have demonstrated their competence, that activity can become a “free-choice” one. Free-choice reading of relevant, interesting, and appropriately challenging texts—and sustained time to read them—is a game changer for turning all students into readers. Middle and high school teachers report that their use of Google Docs has changed their teaching for the better.
