ABSTRACT

Citizens who educate themselves, who can broaden and narrow subject matter, who develop awareness of when more information is needed, who question, read closely, spot and form argument, analyze, make connections, and synthesize are good citizens indeed. One of the main reasons the people begin research with questions and background reading is to determine whether there is an issue or a problem, and what that issue is, before they start to form an argument. Mastering the research process is a great way to acquire or hone the skills needed for presenting and identifying argument. Argument and persuasion are subtle forms of manipulation, and students should see them as such. Almost all human development and advancement has come about because of dissatisfaction. IBM has a famous “smart” computer called Watson that has been touted as the latest tool for doctors to help diagnose and create treatment plans for cancer patients.
