ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the treasure chest of books which help readers to lay a strong foundation for their literacy house. Like all good literacy lessons, mentor texts should be revisited often. When students read them again as they grow as a writer, they make new discoveries that were there all along, they just weren’t ready for them yet. The chapter explains the book Toad Weather by Sandra Markle. This book tells the story of a young girl who has a rainy-day adventure with her mother and grandmother. The surprise her mother has promised is a toad migration. Together with neighbors and friends, Ally, her mother, and her grandmother help the toads cross the street to safety. Markle’s story is a great example for students who want to use their expertise about a topic of interest to write a story. She seamlessly embeds some facts about toad migration through the words of Ally’s mother.
