ABSTRACT

Writing teachers can do several things to help children revitalize the language in their writing. In music, style is expressed in the arrangement of the notes. In writing, it’s in the words. Style is choice, voice, and all that jazz! As an awareness of words grows, students develop special vocabularies that belong to topics in their writing territories. Many vocabularies revolve around sports such as basketball, football, and gymnastics. It is important that teachers help students become aware of the vocabularies they possess, and that they let students know they don’t necessarily need to know how to spell all the words in their vocabularies before using them in their writing. One of the easiest ways to help students develop word choice is through color, and there are many books written about just that. Exploring word choice is exciting at any level. Writers fall in love with words, as do readers.
