ABSTRACT

This chapter describes strategies that direct students to find information that’s new to them, take notes, and avoid plagiarism. Older students may need more time than just a couple of minutes, but two minutes of writing time is long for some third graders. It’s not important that they finish the “all about” strategy during the mini-lesson. Writers have to be careful that they don’t spend too much time researching information they already know. They do need to confirm the accuracy of the facts they know, but it’s a mistake to spend too much time on confirming rather than learning something new. Books are stacked on desks and chairs throughout the classroom. There are rainbows of sticky notes slipping out of each book, holding places where students have found information they plan to use. Inside their notebooks, the sticky notes are plentiful too.
