ABSTRACT

Authentic science always begins with a question, with a fleeting thought, with a curious person. Teachers guide students in developing and carrying out a plan to find, collect, and organize information that addresses the Wonder Statement. Following the Investigative Process, each lesson includes suggestions for innovative activities that reinforce the Learning Goal. In the Next Generation Science Standards, each Performance Expectation (PE) is accompanied by a list of Common Core standards that the NGSS developers believe can be addressed through a science investigation related to that PE. Ideally, students’ science notebooks should have the same kind of richness and creativity. A Wonder Journal’s fluid format encourages creative problem solving. It allows young scientists to think deeply and rigorously.
