This chapter presents lesson focusing on how butterflies change as they grow, a topic that has traditionally been part of the K–2 life-science curricula but is not included in the NGSS for K–2. In this lesson, students learn that butterflies grow and change in predictable ways as part of a continuous life cycle. The chapter describes the two different books, namely Clara Caterpillar, which is a fun fictional story and Where Butterflies Grow that is nonfiction, both looking at different species of butterflies. The author asks readers to imagine that they are going through the stages of a black swallowtail butterfly’s life cycle. Where Butterflies Grow offers a lovely, gentle, and scientifically accurate description of butterfly development from a hatching egg to the glorious moment when the adult takes wing. Strong sensory imagery and lush watercolors open children’s eyes to one of nature’s wonders.
