ABSTRACT

The Salamander Room is a gentle tale with an important message. In this chapter, students learn that animals need food and water to survive, while plants require water and sunlight. It compares the needs of a salamander and a pumpkin as they live and grow. Invite the students to open up their “greeting cards” and tell them that they are going to make a secret drawing on the right-hand side. Some of the vocabulary in From Seed to Pumpkin may be unfamiliar to kindergartners, especially English language learners. As students discuss this question, encourage them to provide rationale for their ideas. To help students understand what pumpkin plants and salamanders need to survive in concrete terms, work with them to create a Venn diagram on the floor of the classroom.
