ABSTRACT

Young children begin informational texts at an early age. Environmental print, or logo reading is among the first kinds of written material preschoolers ascribe meaning to as they recognize the symbols that stand for things and places that are important in their lives. “Informational texts that are predictable and well written provide emergent as well as developing and fluent readers with opportunities to apply their fledgling understandings about print while expanding their world knowledge”. For many children, nonfiction opens the door to seeing a purpose for reading. As they use nonfiction resources to pursue their personal interests and hobbies, books and reading become an integral part of their lives, both in and out of the classroom.
