ABSTRACT

This chapter helps us find the common points between our immediate pressures and our larger purposes as a teacher. It introduces the Heart, Head, Hands, and Feet lesson structure, which invites students to closely read biographies of passionate people. The chapter presents three different Heart, Head, Hands, and Feet lessons, using three different texts, and suggest extensions for integrating the lesson structure into other areas of our instruction. It examines the Heart, Head, Hands, and Feet graphic organizer through the lenses of our four intentions: alignment, balance, sustainability, and joy. Helping children explore the ways in which their passions can shape their futures may seem like a lofty goal, even a distraction, from the accountability pressures that demand our attention.
