ABSTRACT

Leaning In/Leaning Out is a metaphor that helps children learn that even when something is hard, they can still learn to do it. It teaches them to “lean in” to challenges and begins with interpreting images that reflect people either resisting or embracing a task. Students start by imagining what these people are thinking. After analyzing the character’s “thought bubble,” students look at how positive and negative language and thoughts not only affect the character’s emotions and actions, but can influence their own posture toward learning. Leaning In/Leaning Out lessons begin with stories featuring characters who experience a wide range of emotion about the challenges they face.
