ABSTRACT

Over the past few months, children have come to know each other well. The strategies of questioning and inferring are particularly helpful in teaching children how to take the conversation deeper. Asking children to choose a burning question from a chart we’ve created together, or posing an open-ended question myself and working with them to infer meaning, is a perfect way to get started. During January and February the children will meet in book clubs each week, adding context for the importance of questioning and inferring to comprehend text and having great conversations about books. Books with opportunities for making clear-cut predictions that can be confirmed or contradicted in the text are useful for teaching children about prediction.
