ABSTRACT

This chapter looks more closely at classrooms where teachers have successfully created humanized spaces by promoting rough draft thinking. Suzi Sappington teaches Integrated Math 3 honors at Middletown High School, and Tina is one of her students. Suzi shared a few conjectures: eliminating cold calling, building relationships with students by listening and responding to them, providing opportunities for sharing anonymously, and modeling vulnerability. Suzi believed that the relationship she had built with Tina made a difference for Tina. Suzi encourages her students and herself to view themselves as works in progress. Humanizing the mathematics classroom through rough draft talk requires monitoring how we position students and their thinking.
