ABSTRACT

Becoming a designer of student happiness as a part of literacy learning means being intentional in your planning, instruction, methods, and language choices. The author went to exercise classes once in a while that seemed to motivate him, but then he would skip for a few weeks and have a hard time getting started again. Yetta Goodman popularized the term in her book Kidwatching: Observing Children in the Classroom where she explains the practice of kidwatching as "watching kids with a knowledgeable head". Kidwatching is an opportunity to prioritize your own inquiry stance about the students in your classroom. If we are what we repeatedly do, then kidwatching once in a while will make it hard to build a consistent routine for yourself. Consider the benefit of kidwatching outside of instructional time such as joining your students on the playground or in the cafeteria or in P.E. class to see your students in a new way.
