ABSTRACT

The invitation is designed to help students realize their strengths, by reflecting on the things that make them feel strong as readers, writers, speakers, listeners, or creators, and to share those with others. It is especially important for students to recognize that when we experience setbacks, we can draw on our strengths to get back up again as Humpty Dumpty does in Dan Santat’s After the Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again. Humpty Dumpty does not stay broken. Rather, he gets back up again to respond to not only the physical trauma but also the emotional trauma that came from the fall. He does so by regaining some enjoyment in life. He taps into what makes him feel strong.
