ABSTRACT

The invitation is designed to tap into students’ bodies as a way to help them feel strong as learners. It’s also based on research from the field of embodied psychology and specifically the work of Amy Cuddy from her book Presence. Our bodies shape our minds, and when they make themselves small, our thinking can feel small. When they make ourselves big and powerful, they start to believe that our ideas are powerful, too. They see people in power poses when their arms reach up in the air, when runners cross a finish line, or when someone stands with their hands on their hips. The cover image from The Word Collector by Peter Reynolds is an example of a child in a power pose with a clear association to the power of words and wondering.
