ABSTRACT

The invitation is designed to help students grow in their perspective-taking approaches while also learning how to respectfully engage as speakers and listeners. We know we feel valued when others truly listen to what we have to say and when they respond in a way that shows that they were listening (not just waiting for their turn to speak). One of the factors that makes learning stick is repeated practice. For students to get comfortable using specific language to signal they are listening to someone else and to be able to add on or offer a counter-viewpoint takes intentional practice over time. Consider incorporating this invitation at different times in the year when you want students to respectfully listen but also say something. This invitation also works well before students engage in debates about nonfiction topics or before engaging in partner work.
