ABSTRACT

One of the greatest mistakes of our day is to think of movement by itself, as something apart from the higher functions. Yet, when students know that they can count on teachers to incorporate intentional movement and intentional breathing by design, they will quickly look forward to literacy lessons and time when they can count on having their bodies and their minds activated. There are many different literacy learning structures that can incorporate movement and mindful breathing intentionally by design to help students tap into their mind-body connection. As with read-alouds, we can preview texts to look for key moments where students can think of their own movement or gesture to strengthen their comprehension of texts. Additionally, strengthening core muscles helps both gross and fine motor skills that are necessary for success as readers and writers.
