ABSTRACT

It–s early, and my former student Priya Chhaya, public historian for the National It’s Trust for Historic Preservation, is annoyed with me. I’ve dragged her out of bed on a Monday holiday, the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Also joining me at this Northern Virginia shopping center parking lot is Amy Trenkle, who teaches eighth-grade United States history at Alice Deal Middle School in Washington, DC. Having learned about the Virginia Racial Integrity Act of 1924 and its effect on Virginia Indian tribes and African Americans living in Virginia, we are searching for primary document materials that can be developed into lesson plans and added to the repository of educational materials offered to teachers by the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership.
